January 7th, 1954.

Dear Joseph Johnston:-

Your letter containing your letter to C.C. —- and asking a question about a man named H— has just come in and I am answering it at once as I have a few minutes and besides I want to inclose you a sort of chat I had with myself on New Years early morning when I sat down and chatted off the inclosed on my typewriter between one and five.  I had written you much about CONSECRATION etc. but I felt I wanted to quietly state it to myself.  You can see what you think of it and then return it to me.  The subject of Consecration is most important, as you write in your letter.

Your letter to C.C.—- is kindly but they waste their energy on controversy instead of doing better healing, all of which is just straight tom-foolery for they know not what they are talking about.  You are absolutely right unless the Scientist starts from the simply fact of what he knows himself, I consciously am, and that not really his knowing simply an awareness, he gets in the end nowhere unless he is endowed with the Spirit without measure.  This is an age when only individual understanding of God and Why God is, can stand.  The powers of evil in belief are too rampant for anything else to stand.

You ask about any man named H—.  I had a young man named Thurman H— in a class in Reno 1936, a man named Robert C. H— in a class in Los Angeles in 1936 (one class) and a very nice man and his wife Reese A. H— who were in several classes in Los Angeles.  His wife died a short time ago after they had moved to Los Altos in Santa Clara County just as we were leaving there.  They had been in Oregon for a year or two.  He called on me here some months ago and is perfectly clear.  I do not think he could be the one you speak of.  That is my roster.  I know no others.

Do you think it is worth your while to bother with people like C. C. —?  They take endless time and because in belief they have crooked so-called minds, they can see nothing but their own false sense of things and they think they are smart.  I should watch out.  You do not have to save anyone and you surely do not have to straighten up conditions of thought like that man.  Do not be fooled, they are not honest or God would have straightened them ere this, sixty years is quite long enough.  His Roman Catholic background and mix up all the way through is enough to disqualify him for your serious thought.  Be not deceived, that Roman C. thought needs to be left absolutely alone.  It is no good in belief monkeying with it.  It has no decent background.  Like the mortal it was conceived in sin and brought forth in iniquity.  So don’t waste your time on it.  Mrs. Eddy didn’t and she knew mortal mind from start to finish.  Do not believe one word he says.

If I can get in touch with the lady who telephoned me that Kuda Bux had been on the T.V. and she had seen it, I will let you know further but I cannot remember who phoned me about it but Love will unfold all that is needed.  She phoned because she had been to see me, somebody I had not met before, but I had talked to her about Consecration and brought in Kuda Bux, so a couple of days afterwards she called me and told me of his being on the T.V.

His story was again written up in the Oct. 1953 number of OMNIBOOK.  As you suggest I will hold for you the copy of the C.C.— letter you inclosed.  Your reply is good but why do it.  It isn’t worth it.

My best to you both,

Herbert W. Eustace

Dear Joseph E. J.:–

These are two whopping big letters you sent me and that came yesterday afternoon and most interesting but it shocks me when I think the time they took you to write and how much you have to do on your book. Thank you just the same for your analysis of CONSECRATION OR GETTING OUT OF GOD’S WAY. It is excellent, but you should have written one quarter only at least of what you did and of course the same to Oakes about the J— stuff. In fact the J— stuff isn’t worth giving a thought to. It will inevitably die of its own falsity and villainy for that is all it is, no matter what J— thinks which really isn’t of any value, for a thought like that has no ability to think. God thinks and is All that does think. Man doesn’t think, how could reflection think? He simply acts in obedience to the thought of God.

I agree one hundred per cent, of course, with all you say about J— and L—. There is no difference between them for like all that depart from the strict line of C.S. they end up just out and out mental scientists, so-called, and there isn’t such an animal. So don’t waste time on them, any more than you would with a person intent on saying two times two is five.

The last infirmity of sin has now been reached. Its first out pouring was life substance and intelligence in matter, met with the first immaculate, so-called conception that God is the Father of man, or the Jesus sense, the highest human corporeal concept of the divine idea, the second vileness was that malicious mind is mind and controls all through hypnotic suggestion. This was met and mastered through the second immaculate appearing, that All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation or what is called Christian Science, God both Father and Mother of man, the Revelation of Being called SCIENCE AND HEALTH and appearing finally in operation as the Mind of man when the book, gives place to its acceptance as the very Mind of man, and then the third and final iniquity of all with both matter and mortal mind hors de combat, nothing left except to blandly claim that man actually is God. That is the last infirmity of sin and is where we are this moment. That makes the trinity of evil and ends the warfare, if warfare you can call it, it is the final insanity and this lie is met only by pure CONSECRATION the absolute “lost in the eminence of” divine Love the one Mind. This final attack I should feel will be the shortest of all because the most self-evidently absurd. This time no life will be needed to show it forth as with matter, Jesus crucifixion, and with mortal mind, Mrs. Eddy’s crucifixion, which required the lives so-called of both of them to really show the truth forth. This time it is out of matter and mortal mind and just pure straight idiocy, that man is God, and so all, and thus doing away with both man and God if such nonsense could stand.

But this is where we are and where the battle is to be won, the last infirmity of evil is at hand as all that is left for it to claim. But as Mrs. Eddy says because “As truth progresses evil grows more subtle and aggressive, it does not become something, but remains always an illusion and is always met and destroyed through the understanding that divine Love is the only power.”

I have added a little on man being God to the Getting Out of God’s Way, and I think I shall now put it into easily mailable form like the Chronological Data. I thank you very . . . . . [The rest of this letter is missing].

EXTRACT FROM LETTER BY HWE TO D. P.

(March 16, 1954):

Watch carefully that you do not become enamored with human emotion. The rock from whence you were hewn was the rock of Israel in belief and that rock had one huge emblem, emblazoned on it. “Thou shalt not mix.” You remember Abraham went into a far land to choose the wife for Isaac of his own people, and marrying with the “foreigner” was forbidden and that was the very saving grace of Israel. Study the Bible carefully on this. It is all prophetic. Then why think lightly of intermarrying of the so-called races. The very idea of the Eurasian has been an abomination with the Anglo-Saxon always. The beasts even will not mix and neither will the lovely flowers. Each maintains its own species.

Then how doubly important not to imagine something fine comes out of the mixing of races. Races so-called need to be purified not mixed and each race should be so proud of its own race that he would not mix it with another. God defines all things and His race is the one and only race and that race has only one name, His beloved Son. It is not a mongrel thing but it is purity itself. Human belief is ever trying to fool one into thinking some human concoction has some relationship to divinity and then calls such humbuggery a superfine sense of love. “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

Dear Joseph Johnston:–

Here are a half dozen of the CONSECRATION, and by Thursday I shall have the LETTER on the THREE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONS so you will get that pretty quickly too. I think I told you I am sending one CONSECRATION, and one LETTER and one CHRONOLOGICAL DATA to each person who was at any of the meetings. I want them all to have a copy of each leaflet. I feel they are important subjects.

As you will see the CONSECRATION is exactly on the same order as the Data, but the LETTER will be on six pages of half letter sheets in a little larger print. I put it that way so as to separate it entirely from the others so that they would not mentally mix them, although, of course, both the new leaflets bear on the one point of final consecration to God as All-in-all, or as Mrs. Eddy puts it being “lost in the eminence of Mind” where all real healing always resides and why because when so lost there is nothing to heal.

If you need more copies anytime you can let me know but no good your having a lot of papers lying around, enough is enough, and most of your friends to whom you would doubtless give them will already have received them. So I decided it was silly to send you a lot of them.

I appreciate very much what you have written about the consecrated article and I feel sure you will find the three conceptions satisfactory. Especially so the final wind up of the dragon with its worst lie of all, that man is God. I feel if Scientists only realize that the whole monkeyshine of evil is just merely negative action without the slightest mind operating but purely an automatic operation they will see its utter nothingness and yet will not be fooled into not destroying it as their very mind for that is how all ignorance operates always as the mind of its victim whether in one thing or another.

My best to you both.

Herbert W. Eustace.

Dear Mrs. R—:-

Please excuse my not answering your letter of January 10th. before this.

I am not surprised your little ones wonder why they should not be allowed to go to Sunday School like their friends. They have good reason to ask for why shouldn’t they?

I should say that if you do not hold a Sunday School for them yourself, and they could not have a better teacher as their mother would be, and you do not want to send them to a Christian Science Sunday School, but why I do not know, then by all means let them go to some good Evangelical Church Sunday School, but by no means deny them what they wish in that line.

Do not make too much of non essential things, but I would under no circumstances send them to a Roman Catholic Sunday School or any save an Evangelical Church. Best of all hold it yourself.

Live Christian Science and never “strain at gnats and swallow camels”. Nothing is ever gained by that. Divine Love will always tell you exactly what is right if you will consult your heart and listen to His word. Do always that which seems nearest right under the circumstances every time and you will not make many mistakes.

I am inclosing you a little pamphlet on CONSECRATION that I think you will enjoy.

Every good wish.

Dear J.E.J.

Under separate cover I am sending you a package of CONSECRATION and A LETTER OF MARCH 1ST, 1954 dealing with the THREE IMMACUALTE CONCEPTIONS and the nonsense of man being God.

I am going to have a copy of each of these leaflets mailed at once to each one who attended any of the four meetings. I want them all to have them for food for thought, for to me they are most important. The need to be awake is paramount always, but especially to-day coming in its subtle form of man being God, which opens wide the gates of hell in every direction, even as the sun without its rays what would happen to the earth? It wouldn’t any longer be the sun and if man were God, God would no longer be.

Such idiocy but such cunning idiocy. Ninety nine out of one hundred of the run of Scientists would agree with the dragon that my mind is me, and then you are lost because if your mind is you and God is your Mind then you have to be God. No escape from the evil. But fortunately your mind is not you but ever is your mind and you are you.

My best to you.

May 14th. 1954.

Dear Joseph Johnston:-

Thanks for your post card of the 13th. air mail which came through on the dot and I sent you off at once a half a dozen of the three latest. . . . .

Yesterday I handed to the printer a few extra paragraphs to insert after second paragraph on page four of the Letter. I felt the most important point about the dragon’s ability to put the lie of man being God over had really been missed by many of the Letter’s readers and of course without that connecting link of, man’s mind being man, there was no real connection for the dragon to make, so I decided I must make that plainer. It is easy to take things for granted but poor old ignorance can read little between the lines so it must be most simply put. I think this addition has done it and there was just room enough of the original left blank to put these extra paragraphs in so God had it already prepared.

I am putting the new printing on canary yellow paper very light colour but enough to call attention to the difference so that they will possibly look for something new, whereas if it had been just as the old Letter was on white paper they wouldn’t have seen any difference. Of course it will only be sent, to start with, to those who acknowledged the receipt of the first one. It is evidently having the good effect of making people think, but this one point of man’s mind not being man, is a point every Scientist must be thoroughly awake to or he is robbed of his power to speak as one having authority and is merely otherwise the puppet of any fool nonsense calling itself his mind and so him.

My love to you both.

Herbert W. Eustace.

May 22nd. 1954.

Dear Joseph Johnston:-

Your Air-special of the 19th. came promptly through with its cargo of very valuable thought for which you have my earnest thanks. You are a very generous chap with your praise and thoughtful comment and I know are about your Father’s business in doing this all-important job God has given into your hands and you are doing it with such a loving sense of Mrs. Eddy that it will carry that message of love to the ends of the earth and furthermore will uncover for you exactly all that you should have uncovered to make your work exactly right. Be sure and do not let the dragon carry you into analyzing side paths that really have no relation with your work.

What this one does or another cuts little ice in the Science of being. It is largely a composite of human likes and dislikes with always the underlying feeling how much better I could do such and such a thing. That leaves God out of it as I notice in your analysis you point out so clearly. Start from God every time and you will end right if you maintain it.

I am returning you at once your letters to the Oakes and Mrs. Lambie and thank you so much for those statements of Mrs. Eddy which you say I may keep and which I am very glad to do. I have lately read a supposed copy of Frye’s Diary and all I can say it should not be circulated. What possible good can it do to parade the illusionary hardships that beloved woman bore in bearing our sins on her own shoulders. None whatever, because it never really occurred any more than our sins occurred. They did not. Think of a Scientist portraying Jesus as the orthodox Church does or as Paul failed not to do “Christ and him crucified” except for a special reason. I can see no special reason for the babblings of our friend Calvin Frye. I hope that isn’t too hard but that is what they seem like to me. Do not take me too seriously for really nothing can be without its divine purpose for as Mrs. Eddy is attributed as having said “If the devil brings it God sent it”, so we will leave it there.

I am inclosing you a couple of the addition the printer says he cannot let me have the complete Letters until a couple of weeks possibly but you can paste this in its right place by cutting off the side edges to make the right page. I am glad you approve of it.

My best to you.

Herbert W. Eustace

June 1st, 1954.

Dear Joseph Johnston:

Thank you for yours of the 27th. Catherine the Great was surely some little busy body as bad as her kinsman Peter the Great but the wind passeth over it and it is gone the place thereof knoweth it no more. How true that is of the mortal whether so-called great or small. His days are as a tale that is too old and what does he amount to? A little perhaps as he reflects the one divine Intelligence and performs his little office as showing forth divine Love, and that of course is really no little office it is truly a mighty big one and the aim of each one of us to perform our job as reflection, amounts to what Jesus said, “Whoso hath seen me hath seen the Father”. That is something.

Thank you also for the clippings. I am returning the one’s you asked to have sent back. I agreed with that one on Luther.

What you say about man being God and the world’s present attitude is correct. These are truly the Last Days. Anything but reflection is really, man is God business. I like the expression “under God” for it is indeed under Him all things are done.

I still haven’t received from the printer the new LETTERs he promised but renigged. Will send when I get some.

By the way will you please tell me the name of the firm that makes those refillers of fiber for erasing typewriting you sent me and that are so excellent? I want to tell a friend.

That statement of Mrs. Eddy’s on seeing a drunken man that “if that is the man I see, that is the man I am and I refuse it because it is not the man I wish to be.” is a wondrous statement. It applies to the least detail of daily life. It ought to be in my list of gems. It is in my heart.

Thank you for those quotations of Mrs. Eddy you ended your letter with. Only a firm foundation in Truth can give a fearless wing and a sure reward.”

My best to you both.

Herbert W. Eustace.

June 3rd. 1954.

Dear Joseph Johnston:-

Just a line to thank you for your letter of the 2nd. and the interesting clippings you inclosed. That stat. of Mrs. Eddy’s letter to Dixon was so good, so like her. Yes, she did indeed value Dixon and he was a great help to her, not only on the Monitor, but in handling the commotions in England. He was in his glory when a pen was in his hand and he had something to really use it for. Truly his pen he made mightier than the sword and proved it many times to be the very sword of God Himself.

I still have no new printed LETTER from the printer but it will arrive in due time and then you will have one or more.

All I know about Dixon writing a fortnightly letter to Mrs. Eddy was just the bare fact that he did that, how long I know not. He built up his world correspondence on his own while running the London Monitor Office with the whole world outside the Americas as his field of operation and he would send his stuff in to Boston for use. Henry Newmark would be a good source of knowledge about Dixon because he was his private secretary and went everywhere with him. Next time I see Henry I will ask him if he has anything particularly about Dixon and his work or when he goes through New York on his usual summer trip to Europe he might stop in and have a chat with you if you would like him to do so.

Whatever is needed for you or any one else to know about Dixon you can but personality fades in this age of pure realization into insignificance in a sense.

Your letter to Mrs. Smith is correct Science but that is all you know so of course you write it but you give them an awful dose of it when you do write them. Why will you insist on so much? Have you no mercy on their digestive organs, as the old saying is, have a heart. Cultivate the simplicity you have got to have in your book for it to be ever read. You know this, discipline yourself. If, in no other way, then use the Litany service of the Episcopal Church!!!

Talking about the Episcopal Church and Geoffery Fisher who I knew when he was just a boy; His father was my God-father as they are called, and his father was a very dear devoted temperance man in the early days of temperance reform getting under way.

Well you and your wife are a very dear couple and as Mrs. Eddy said of Judge Hanna and his wife you are a very whole man.

My love to you both.

Herbert W. Eustace.

From letter written by Mr. Eustace 6/14/1954.

YOU CALL IT AWARENESS

“I consciously am does not come as pure feeling whatever. It does not come at all. It simply is and you call it awareness. Whence it comes and whither it goes you know not. It just is. There is no feeling or seeing to it…You would be completely stuck were it not for the fact that your awareness is nothing of your own doing, so automatically you are at the point of effect and to every effect there spontaneously is cause hence you are out of your dilemma, and cause is and you find yourself the conscious identity of this very cause and then you go forward as such identity establishing what cause is and must be to be cause, etc.”

The Gaylord, Los Angeles, 6/14/54.

Dear Joseph E. Johnston:-

Your very important letter of the 11th Friday is just in and I am stopping everything to answer it at once and I am going to take paragraph by paragraph, so if you have a copy of your letter to me as doubtless you have for you are a most meticulous fellow and wisely so, for nothing could better fit you for the job God has given into your hands than to be absolutely meticulous from every angle. Number your paragraphs.

First of all let me disabuse your mind of every sense that our mutual friends the Whartons would touch any such stuff as you have run into at the end of a bargepole, as the old saying was. They are straight as a whistle. They are now living in Carmel in a little cottage they have rented. I have no idea what their future intentions are except to be like you and me genuine Scientists. They are foot loose in every way so can go where they please. They several times mentioned some time spending the summer in New England but I don’t think it will be this summer because they seem to like Carmel very much.

Next your Thomas– seems like an earnest Scientist and was at the Los Angeles Meeting, although I never met him until quite a long time after the meeting, and have only done so twice since. I am surprised he did not answer your letter. That would look like a somewhat unsettled thought. He is an advertising man I believe. But I really know nothing whatever about him. I have an impression he has had some rough water to sail through and that might have had something to do with his not answering, although common courtesy should have made him reply. He seems a courteous fellow. But rest assured God is back of every action affecting you in anyway. Always rely upon this and the answer will be seen.

Now for your letter paragraph by paragraph and you have fourteen of them so I shall refer to them in their order and answer as best I can each one.

#1. You know Mrs. W. quite well and you know she is quite voluminous and I am happy to know you are avoiding correspondence in that direction. It needs to think and not talk. Running around to this, that and the other thing to get enlightenment is not fruitful of good, but nevertheless she is an earnest woman and I like her, but too muchie talkie. So watch out and do not put too much confidence there. What Mrs. L would hand out could never now be trustworthy. She is widely off.

Your statements of absolute truth in #1 are as you know absolute, and so correct. You think in a straight line, trust it and it will guide you rightly.

#2. I haven’t the slightest idea who your J.P. is and never heard of Blue Prints for Living. Sounds like Mrs. X–. stuff.

#3. I have already said that our Whartons had nothing to do with that book. You must expect people to imitate what you know is C.C.T. in order to fool the public. The full and final revelation of Christian Science is given in SCIENCE AND HEALTH as perfectly as it can be given and when the spirit of that book is imbibed it will be found to be divine Science which Mrs. Eddy’s Revelation of Christian Science always has been and forever will be. S. & H. is final, complete, whole, so far as human belief is concerned. It contains all that I have ever said that is true and all that ever anyone can say on the subject of Christian Science that is true. It is a closed chapter. Its Spirit alone can carry forward and there is no letter to that Spirit. Ignorance alone thinks there can be improvements etc. When a truth is given it is finished. The demonstration of that truth is up to the individual and of course is purely to do with the Adam dream and never touches the reality.

What you say in #3 is stated perfectly. C.S. is of course a feeble sense of divine Science which is wholly spiritual even as John’s sense or Jesus sense was equally feeble in putting into words or even deeds for mortals to behold.

In #2 you gave the initials of the author of the book as J.P. but in the rest of your letter you use B.P. I take it you mean the same individual if it has a name.

#4. How could “matter and spirit” be “the same substance and that substance Spirit”? S. & H. says “What the human mind terms matter and spirit indicate states and stages of consciousness”, indicates means figure of speech. Also “Could Spirit evolve its opposite matter?” Also “Spirit cannot become matter” and so on ad infinitum. All such arguments are simply the determination to hold Spirit in the grasp of matter and there is none. These foolish or wicked human concoctions or deductions will meet their Waterloo when it begins to dawn through perhaps suffering that man is not God, the agony and blank of it all, will, as a writer in the Bible puts it “call upon mountains to fall on them and the hills to cover “them”. But pride must have its fall and our God is a jealous God in that He allows nothing unlike Himself to operate for one moment as reality.

#5. I consciously am, does not come as pure feeling whatever. It does not come at all. It simply is and you call it awareness. Whence it comes or whither it goes you know not. It just is. There is no feeling or seeing to it. You would be completely stuck were it not for the fact that your awareness is nothing of your own doing, so automatically you are at the point of effect and to every effect there spontaneously is cause, hence you are out of your dilemma, and Cause is and you find yourself the conscious identity of this very cause and then you go forward as such identity, establishing what Cause is and must be to be Cause. etc.

#6. One does not learn through revelation but you learn by starting or beginning with yourself, with the one and only fact you actually know your self, and “by education brightens into birth.” You start with what you know that which begins in yourself and you induce Cause from that because you could not consciously be unless there was first the Consciousness that is and then your sailing is alone with Consciousness. But remember you begin at home, the only place you know, but instantly get away from that to that which Isness is.”

#7. Anyone who does not recognize the Revelator as in one sense of the word, his only source of information to begin with and to verify every word he utters from, is just a “thief and a robber” as Jesus called them and from such, what can you get – a blank. That is the sure sign of mental science or man is God business. It stamps itself at once. No matter what it thinks or tries to fool itself into thinking is its motive, its one and only motive is pure deviltry to deceive and make itself something, to exalt self. Yes, you doubtless can read into the book very easily that it is a fraud and the work of the one evil, the dragon.

#8. No indeed there is no other way, the I is still the way as Jesus pointed out and there is only one way and no man can come up some other way. The end of time is at hand and God has given His way and that has to be taken by every so-called mortal or he does not attain the prize.

#9. Yes, you are absolutely right without honesty how could you have any truth, that is what honesty means and is. What you said to J– was entirely correct. He was dishonest and so could not give the truth. “Honesty is spiritual power, dishonesty is human weakness which forfeits Divine help.”

#10. Without Mrs. Eddy where would we be? Then can our love for her and our open recognition of what she has done for us be less than boundless or can it ever be covered up? The same who does this is a thief and robber as Jesus said.

#11. I think you need to “criticize the author” even as you did J– and not be backward. Only one thing held back your real criticism was you did not want to be too harsh on the author in by any chance you felt he had anything to do with C.C.T. You should have been doubly severe if he had had anything to do with C.C.T. and then could lend himself to such a dastardly attack as what you have quoted his words imply. You must be on your toes with all the humbug you will find springing into liberty under this aegis of man is God rot.

#12. I wouldn’t when talking to Mrs. W. be afraid to use vigorous expression. She needs severe holding in, for the unruly member, voices the thought, that jumps to what can be very erroneous ideas, and then voices them with the assumption of authority. Such thoughts skip all over the country grabbing this and that as something wonderful. Of such beware and keep the even tenor of your way knowing what you know. No you can never roam around for “straight is the way and narrow is the path that leadeth to Life and few there be that find it.” Mrs. Eddy did, and her true followers only, will do the same but only by holding fast to the line and never letting go of the light of S. & H.

#13. Yes, I know Mrs. J. having seen her several times and she, too, was at the Meeting. By all means have a talk with her.

#14. Happy days at Frog Pond to you both and my love.

Herbert W. Eustace.

Excerpts from Letter to Joseph E. Johnston from H. W. Eustace written June 24, 1954:

Los Angeles, California
June 24, 1954

Dear Joseph E. Johnston:

“You understand so clearly, that the slightest sense of personality really kills everything. That is why Eve stands as the mother of all living, because she impersonalized evil, and mind you in writing pretty nearly anything about what concerns the Adam humbuggery, you are dealing with evil for there was and never could be an Adam or an Adam dream so the great thing is to keep out personality just as much as possible if one wishes to help so-called mankind.”

– – – – – – – – – –

“I am glad you differentiate so clearly between Christian Science and divine Science. Always do that, because divine Science is the Revelation and is really purely spiritual, whereas CHRISTIAN SCIENCE is the glorious interpretation that Saint of Mind, Mary Baker Eddy revealed to us as SCIENCE AND HEALTH, which has succeeded in finally leading us to pure realization and so meeting the dragon on its own terms pure Mind and conquering it.”

– – – – – – – – – –

“You have a great trust and you are doing it with all your heart and mind and it will bless all mankind. You are absolutely right of course there is only one SCIENCE AND HEALTH and one REVELATOR, and they are all that are worth writing about and building on.”

Herbert W. Eustace

P. S.

Thank you also for your letter of the 17th. I knew you would be relieved to know our Whartons wrote no such stuff as you had run across. I had a note from Mrs. Wharton yesterday. They like Carmel Valley but they say nothing about their plans. They are always very reticent about their movements, in fact any thing personal. Any real Scientists learns he has to be because “his times are in God’s hands”.

I am glad you see so clearly all that is involved in the three Immaculate Conceptions etc. and also in CONSECRATION which spontaneously is essential for the full realization of that being “lost in the eminence of Mind” that means demonstration. Keep your clear vision. Yes, this idiotic “roaming” lends only to the ditch of “nonsense and worse than wastes its years” as Mrs. Eddy quotes somewhere. Scientists must quit so gossiping and instead find each one himself the center, as it were, of his own being as the reflection of infinite Love and there abide. There is an old saying “curiosity killed the cat”. It will kill anything.

Dear Joseph Johnston:-

That was very good of you to send me the two packages of erasers I asked for. Now I have a supply and it is very nice. I inclose a one dollar bill as that is what I figure the cost to be. Thank you very much.

We have just been having a few warm days virtually the first of the Summer. It has been wonderfully cool but this apartment of mine is a very delightful one as I get the two important breezes from one direction or another so I never have a warm night. I also have fans so I am most comfortable.

Really my opinion, contrary to what we in the North of California always considered this climate here is very good indeed. Of course Santa Clara Valley is supposed to be the best California has to offer, but there is certainly nothing wrong with this.

It seems to me that people, Scientists are catching on to the meaning of what the dragon era is as man is god, and it surely came at the right time for the land is filled with the nonsense. But it has no power when understood.

Every good wish to you both and thanks again.

Dear Joseph E. J:-

I am returning your copy of BLUEPRINTS you kindly sent me with the single comment. I think it is a lot of bunk, just words, words, words. Such things are not worth reading. You get absolutely nothing from them for they are founded on the human mind which is a myth.

The land will be full of such nonsense probably as time goes on but fellows like you should never waste a moment on such stuff that has no foundation but human twaddle called thinking and there is no MIND to it.

Thanks just the same but don’t send any more and don’t waste your own valuable time on stuff like that. Remember any body can stick a lot of words together that they have gotten perhaps from someone else or not and there are fools ever ready to read into them some thing of newness.

Every good wish to you both,

P.S. Don’t return this 1.00 bill again. HWE.

Dear J.E.J.
I never saw such a fellow.  Always wanting to give something.  Well when you get your book finished you truly will have something to give and that will last through time for it will be the one book that will be accepted as the bona fide correct statement of the founding facts of Christian Science.

This special gift of yours to-day however is that what seems excellent Eversharp pen with its extra cartridge of red, all prepared for red-penciling your, I hope not too many words.  Thank you very much for this pencil.  It will be very useful for I use a red pencil in marking my books etc. and this will be superior to pencil writing.  This is really ink writing.

In one of your Post Cards which thank you for all of them, you asked some question about my attending a meeting by Mrs. Eddy.  No, I never attended any such meeting and as far as I know no such meeting was held in my time.  The only meetings I ever attended were the three General Meeting of Teachers.  One in Chicago, one in New York and one in Boston.  But Mrs. Eddy was not associated with any of those that I know of, but doubtless, not only originated them and may have dictated their proceedings.  The Chicago meeting papers were read by various ones on subjects sent to them ahead of the meeting and no copies were allowed to be kept.  The Boston meeting was addressed only by Edward A. Kimball and I think the New York meeting was the same.  At any rate I do not remember any papers read at any of the meetings except the Chicago one.

The only time I ever heard Mrs. Eddy speak was from her Balcony at Pleasant View to a large crowd gathered on the lawn underneath the Balcony.  In that address to me one of the outstanding points was she played on the popular item in those days of TRUSTS and she warned us to have no other trust but God.  It was a short address.  Of course I was at the Chestnut Hill gathering of about fifty Coms. on Pub. when Dickey came to the head of the stairs and read Mrs. Eddy statement about not looking for her in her personality but only in her books and her great love for us and all mankind.  She sat at the window of her study and waved to us when we were outside.

Evidently you take Mrs. Eddy’s statement in answer to Mark Twain as hammering at the, man is God, business.  I forgot how Mark Twain wrote but I know he forgot himself and paid an awful penalty for attacking God’s anointed.  I think you take what she said correctly “Christian Science eschews divine rights in human beings”.  That is all she could have meant?

The best to you both and again thank you for the pencil but I hope I will not want to red-pencil anything you write and I will not, if you will remember that words do not necessarily mean conveying thought.  They sometimes mean confusing.  When you have made it the best you know how then quietly go to work or get Mary to just cut it plum in half and then perhaps another half cut again.

You are both very dear people but I will bank on Mary’s judgment for composition that will go over, but no one can beat you for facts.

Dear Joseph E. J:-

It is time these clippings were returned to you. Thank you for them and for the Medina one too. He came of good stock and that is a wonderful belief of advantage, but of course the one essential need is to base our ancestry on God and no where else, then it is safe, but with over twenty million direct ancestors in the belief of the mortal, merely thirty generations back, a paltry nine hundred years, what a wreck of ancestry each one takes on, but fortunately, it T’aint so, as the coloured woman healed her patient with.

My best to you both.

Dear Mary and Joseph Johnston:-

You will both enjoy this fine story so illustrative of genuine Christian Science.

I have before me on my desk quite an accumulation of very dear letters from all parts of the globe, and among them yours.  These should be answered, and each one of which I would love to answer directly, but that seems at present a pretty big job.  I have, too, what to me is a lovely little story, so fraught with genuine Christian Science, that I find I just automatically want to put it in every letter I have been writing since I first heard it.  It is hard for me not to do that, and so the idea came to me, Why not write this little story out, and send it as a thank you, and as an answer and appreciation of your kind letter?

In that way I will free my desk of its accumulation of unanswered letters and my conscience of its pricking, and bring to you what perhaps you may have heard long ago.  Even so, it will help you to hear it again, coming from a deep lover of the power and spirit of this story, which is of course a true one, although stated in my own language.

My wish and hope is that at this, which has long served as a special season for thanksgiving, when the heart goes out to the Giver of all good for the harvest He has vouchsafed to one and all, both spiritual and material so-called, that it will be truly a season of great gratitude to you for the advancing steps you are taking in Christian Science.  I know this little story will help you to take them faster, as you faithfully abide by its sincere and natural truth:  lost in the “Eminence of Mind.”

All good is already yours,

Herbert W. Eustace

THIS IS THE LITTLE STORY THAT I LOVE

A poor suffering fellow, living in a large Eastern city, who had sought, like the Biblical character, who “had suffered many things of many physicians (this time many C.S. Practitioners), and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, finally becoming wholly discouraged, one day met a friend, and said to him: “Cannot you recommend some Christian Scientist to me, who can help me in some way to get out of this awful mess I am in?  I am nothing of a Scientist, although I have studied and worked hard myself, but apparently to little avail.”

His friend said, “Yes, I think I can”, and took his card out of his pocket and wrote the name and address of a lady and gave it to him.

As a last desperate hope he took himself to the address given, rang the bell, and a colored maid came to the door.

He went inside and immediately said, “I am looking for a lady by the name of so and so.”

The one he was speaking to quietly said, “That is my name. He was taken aback that his friend had not mentioned to whom he was recommending him.  He took the chair offered him and sat down.  Then he began his tale of woe, and it was a long one.

When he made his first pause, his listener quietly said, “T’aint so, T’aint so”, and on he went and each time he paused she would again softly say, “T’aint so, T’aint so”, but on he would go.

Of course, when he finished his recital, “T’aint so”, had won the day, and the man was entirely healed.  Now what had this dear woman done?  Like Mrs. Eddy, when looking into the face of a storm beheld the face of God there and the storm cloud vanished.  So this dear woman looking into the face of Divine Love, couldn’t find a single thing there of the sorry story being rehearsed to her, and so simply said, “T’aint so, T’aint so”, and what she said was so.

Is not this just what Mrs. Eddy means when she says, “When thought is lost in the eminence of Mind the healing takes place”? In the “eminence of Mind” is there the slightest element of evil? Perfection is all that abides in the “eminence”, and this dear woman proved it.

Must we not, one and all, go and do likewise?  Are not you the living witness that there is no such thing as evil, in the slightest, anyway in all creation?  Have you not the assurance within yourself that you are, that, I consciously am?  Could you have this assurance of being if there were one iota of destructive element in Cause?  Of course you could not, for you would not be, for there could be no creation.  Then you are the living witness that perfection is and is All that is.

Is it not on this one basis alone that all healing, meaning thereby, whereas I was sick and I am well, is accomplished, whether of so-called material medicine, or whatnot, as well as Christian Science?  If perfection were not the eternal fact, ever-present no healing of any kind could take place.  Remember this, as I know you ever do.  Be ready in season and out of season, with your “T’aint so”, to every form of evil.  No matter how slight the divergence from infinite good may seem to be.  “T’aint so”, and it will bless you abundantly when your heart is full and you really mean it.

Herbert W. Eustace.

[Ed. Note] In his last year of life, Mr. Eustace wrote a letter stating he wanted to contact Mrs. Knight, so Mr. Eustace obviously thought very highly of her. Mrs. Knight came from the Black Chicago Christian Science church, the 8th Church of Christ, Scientist of Chicago, South Park.

December 17, 1954

Dear Joseph E. J:-

I owe you thanks for a number of most interesting data of one kind or another that you have so generously sent me. Right off the bat those interesting photostats of an early Journal. How wonderfully it all speaks of her indefatigable love and energy that built up the whole structure of Christian Science for us. Ceaseless, ceaseless mother love watching over her child to see that it grew intelligently and sturdily and not swallowed up in old theology and the better sense of human belief. She had to watch everywhere and never tired of her watch. God grant I as one of her followers may never tire either. It is Spirit alone however that can prevent that. Material sense would swamp us any moment.

You know all this. What a new term to me that word fetishism is and how appropriate to so much that sounds wise and good but which is nonsense really. That “LITTLE GODS” you have marked is so good too. No, man could never be equal to his Maker but is forever the perfect divine reflection.

One thing poor adam-man needs badly also to grasp is that his only origin is his so-called conception by his mother. His so-called father never touched him. The adam begins with conception and hasn’t a blessed thing to it back of conception, that is where it starts. It has no prior origin as S&H rightly states that may subsequently be regained. And always remember that only one can be in the conception business, and that has to always be the highest quality of thought, which the feminine quality always expresses, whether called man or woman, but only the woman thought can conceive. Then in that respect you are as immaculate as Jesus, but the association of ideas connected with your conception and that of Jesus is the separating point, but only that, apart from that conception is ever pure, for it is wholly mind, and never one thing to do with matter. Then there is no father attached at all. No wonder Jesus said, call no man your father upon earth. He didn’t say however, call no woman your mother upon earth because he knew in belief the woman was the one wholly responsible for the adam belief of child and that is why he is also represented as having said to Salome, “When ye women (not ye men) cease to bear children death will cease.” Why, because woman holds it in her power to actually never conceive and so even mortal birth control will have to rise to the point where woman perceives that she is the only one involved in any birth. That silly association of the idea of the union of the male and female bodies has not one thing to do with it. Conception is single file and is wholly of the feminine quality of mind not one thing to do with matter. Think what this understanding will do to the lying claim of heredity which means prior to conception, not after conception. After is simply the hypnotic suggestion implanted by the mother’s so-called thought on the embryo that she is shortly going to hand out to finish its devilish training until it finally vanishes in understanding, after paying the full penalty for it’s mother’s false conceiving of man as less than the perfect reflection of God which of course the adam-anything never is.

Free yourself from every heredity claim through the realization you never had a father as anything to do with you and break the mesmerism of hypnotic suggestion that a belief of a mind called a mother could inflict its hypnotism on you or anyone. Destroy the whole nonsense but see conception as wholly of one and not two and so release yourself from all hereditary lies. No so-called male, and I am speaking even in the realm of belief, ever touched your being. Think this out for yourself but get it clearly and it will lift a load of humbuggery from you.

You have just called me on the phone. Very dear of you both but don’t do it again. You have other uses for your money. I told you I was writing you and this is what it was on so on to you it goes and will make you think alone with God. Do not talk it ever, until you make it your own. Then it is yours and not until then. It is one of the deep things of God but self evident always. Only dullness of heart and mind hide such things. When woman says no to conception, she will never conceive, impossible for her to do so. She alone decides and so is the one birth controller of the adam-man and so is responsible for death, just as Jesus said.

This is enough; my very best to you two dear people and divine Love is blessing you every instant and keeping you in His path.

Herbert W. Eustace.

February 22nd. 1955.

Dear Joseph E. J:-

I shall of course be very happy to see you and Mary with your bundle of script, which as I understood you on the phone you plan to ship ahead so that I can go over it somewhat before your arrival.

Now my dear boy what a goose you are to get disturbed at something another does even though they are your friends. Divine love is a closer friend than any mortal, save your wife, then don’t be disturbed at anything a person does. If it is not right God will overrule it, for His first care is for you, so trust Him implicitly. My last word to you last night was to ask Mary to tell you what to do and for you to follow exactly what she says. Sometimes emotion gets one too near a scene to know just what is taking place and a girl like Mary stands quietly apart and so can see the right thing for you to do. Then go ahead and do it, and you will find it is truly God guiding you.

I am returning some clippings, etc. you have kindly sent me. Thank you. And for numerous post cards too, all interesting.

I shall reserve plenty of time about the 20th. of March so that if you arrive about then I shall be ready for you but remember only take any trip because God is pointing it out to you as the thing to do and there again be guided by Mary. Divine Love didn’t give you that dear wise understanding girl for nothing. He gave her to you because of the immense help she is and can always be to you so take advantage of what Love has given you and be most humble in your approach to that great gift. Without Love’s gift of Bess to me I could have done nothing for she was always ninety nine percent of whatever little I have been able to accomplish. Mary is the same to you then cherish her as the Pearl of Great Price which when a man findeth he selleth all that he hath and buyeth it with love and tenderness passing human belief.

My love to you both.

Dear J.E.J.-

Under separate cover I am sending you a package of CONSECRATION and a LETTER of March 1st, 1954 dealing with the THREE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONS and the nonsense of man being God.

I am going to have a copy of each of these leaflets mailed at once to each one who attended any of the four meetings.  I want them all to have them for food for thought, for to me they are most important.  The need to be awake is paramount always, but especially to-day coming in its subtle form of man being God, which opens wide the gates of hell in every direction, even as the sun without its rays; what would happen to the earth?  It would not any longer be the sun and if man were God, God would no longer be.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Johnston:-

Your friend or messenger, the President of the California Bank in Lomita, a little town nearest here just about a mile and a half away, Mr. Stanton, surprised us with a little visit yesterday morning bringing us your message of enquiry as to how we fared etc.  He found us very comfortably installed in a dear little house with enough of a garden when it gets in perfect order to keep me busy gardening a few hours each day which as you know is what I enjoy.  Mildred came down the other day and walked in on us.  The us I refer to is the splendid nurse Mrs. Munro who was in charge of me when I found the rascally trick played on me to get me there.  More of this anon when I compose the full story of the miniature Next Friends Suit that was played out in all its fullness including one relative at least, with what I thought was a friend but who proved an absolute traitor and whose nefarious scheme if it had succeeded would have been the death knell of THE ONE VOLUME.

The whole comical farce patterned the Next Friends Suit in miniature exactly and when I write it up giving the details it will read like the old Roman Catholic days of the Inquisition.  James Cassell to whom I unfortunately introduced you and many others to was the ring leader with Dr. J– as his accomplice and C–W– was a smart aleck tool.

You might wonder what on earth could be their motive in such a dastardly effort to have me declared non compos mentis except to get control of what money I had but of course that was really minor except as with Judas to still the conscience for the moment.  The real point was to destroy the Christ as presented in the School Room book the ONE VOLUME.  That book evil hates if it knew enough to hate and the purpose of evil was to destroy the author’s mental standing and automatically the book becomes of no moment.

When I really discovered the rascality at work I quickly went to work and we soon uncovered it all and as in the Next Friends Suit the Court immediately threw their humbuggery out of court although they actually had a day and hour set for hearing, and I never heard of it until it was almost consummated.  I was to have been arrested, brought into Court and committed.  What do you think of that and your so-called relative and friends behind it all?  But as the Bible says every weapon that is formed against thee shall come to naught.

All very funny but I shall tell it all in a letter some day that will open blind eyes to see how error repeats itself and with the same results always.  Knavery is seen for what it is.

I have a charming little home.  I might add directly I saw the deviltry, I notified those concerned including the Hotel that I withdrew every recommendation I had ever made about Cassell.  My love to you both.  God is in His holy heaven, let all the earth keep silence before Him.  I know your work is progressing.  Everything stands as before in spite of lies and liars.

Yours,
Herbert W. Eustace.

Letter of June 4, 1955.

Your very dear and understanding letter of June 2nd was a great joy to me and I want to thank you both very much for it.  To be understood is the best of all.

Please tell —- I will surely do as she bids me if the necessity arises, but you know God always supplies at hand just the needed support and intelligence needed to carry His commands through.  Even as our lawyer of Torrance, close to here, has proved himself a most intelligent chap and just the one to meet the subtle tricks and lies of evil.  So it always goes.  The enemy has no idea whatever how we discovered their rascality and what they were up to and checkmated it.  Divine Love showed us every move to make and we simply did it, no fuss, no bother.  But their nefarious schemes are not forgotten of Principle and the uttermost must be paid by one and all in the final windup.

Any time you feel like writing anything do not hesitate to say just what comes to you to say.  God is directing your words, always, so say what you wish.

No I have no recollection whatever of receiving the note you left for me but I probably did not receive others too.  But I got their full import never the less, you may be sure.  Thank you however for sending it to me.

I gave your message to Mrs. Munro of course and she was pleased to receive it and to know how you felt.  In Mrs. Munro divine Love had just the right one as Nurse for I am satisfied I would never have gotten out of that place without her understanding not only the ropes but having the courage to take her own career into her own hands and stand by her patient to the limit, and now the rascals are trying to black ball her with her Registry, etc., which can in the end only miserably fail because she is signed on with me to stay and make a home for me.  When I had to sign her off at the hospital to conform with the powers that be there, she automatically was signed on with me and so came on next day as my nurse under the State rules, etc., which made it all very orderly.  Yes, she is a strong character or she would not have dared do as she did.  That fellow Cassell was a pitiful help having to be told three times to get his car there at once and not delay.  He would have handed me to the authorities but he hadn’t courage enough even to do that, and finally arrived with his car while I was waiting in the underground passage for him with Mrs. Munro and one Doctor asked what was going on.  This was about 9:30 or so and she quietly answered “O, just a patient going home,” and when Cassell did come after terrible delays she loaded us in and waved us away, then followed the next day.  Then their machinations were doubled but all only to fall to the ground.  One night about nine or so o’clock a knock came to the door of the motel where we had three rooms and I answered it and there was a roughish looking man who said he had been sent I think he said by Cassell, to examine me and report.  I quickly told him there was nothing to examine and the best thing he could do was to get out of the place or he certainly would have something himself to be examined for.  They had a young woman planted in the shrubbery, to also report, just outside the door.  This same young woman they planted right in my sitting room at Cassell’s place and when I asked her what she wanted she said she had been asked to stay the night and watch.  I said watch what, and who sent you and she said, “Mr. Cassell; he drove me out in my car and left me here.”  “Well,” I said, “You will promptly get out of here and take yourself home,” but as I was putting her out she swore she did not know her way home and would have to stay all night and I relented to the point of that, with daylight she was to depart and I actually had to sit up all night to get her promptly out at daylight which I did.  She was a cunning little rascal and I am satisfied while pretending to be asleep managed while I was out of the room to read a letter I was writing.  This is the maiden that was hiding in the bushes outside the door when the rough looking man who said he was a doctor sent to examine me but who looked more like a roughish veterinary.  That was the last of that performance but it shows just what depths they went to in their monkey business.  What fools we mortals be.

Thank you very much for the enclosures you sent of Mrs. Eddy’s statements.  They were excellent.  Also thank you for the copies of my letters to you.  I am glad to be reminded of how correctly God summed up the nonsense for me, and of course supplied “every need” especially this splendid Mrs. Munro.  The rascally doctors had planned an operation without my knowledge and you can imagine where I would have come out with that; singing with the birdies, and that was the plain intention of the one evil and just to discredit THE ONE VOLUME as the work of a crazy man. Yes, true, but crazy with divine Love and always about His business, so all plots failed.

Your sizing up the different ones is very correct I think.  Mrs. B- – – just made a plain fool of herself.  She had an opportunity to take a glorious stand but couldn’t rise evidently.  This she will have time to regret.  Poor C– was a conceited little goose thinking she could master-mind anything and is now reaping her reward.  B– didn’t quite fall as wholesale but he too made a fool of himself.  M–, dear lass, touched the vile stuff but only to react against it fortunately for her sake but not as she could have done.  And so on.

I have written enough but I had to thank you and – – – – for your dear letter and purposes.  They are of God.

My love to you both.

ROLLING HILLS, CALIFORNIA
July 18th. 1955.

Dear Joseph E. Johnston:–

Thank you all for your various communications including telephones which you are a perfect goose to waste your money on and to talk such reams when a few words are enough.  I am so glad to read in your letter received to-day of July 14th. that “phone calls will be few and far between now”. . . .

Now with regard to the new car.  I agree with you that I prefer a broken in car, but Beth, Mrs. Munro wants to break in her own car and this gift I wish to be to her own choosing, so we will stick to not even an executive’s car.

I thought perhaps your Mr. Tuttle might have in mind possibly a brand new car with discounts all off etc. but that is not necessary.  It is possible that we can get just as good a trade right here at Torrance which has a good Plymouth dealer and would doubtless give a good trade in on the Studebaker which Mr. Tuttle would or might find it difficult to do.

Yes Mrs. Munro would like every modern convenience for driving and as you say “power steering” is most important.  With regard to colour.  Yes on that too, Mrs. Munro is as desirous of having red but I don’t think that means top too.  I am sure she will be quite willing to do as you suggest, pay a visit to some of the yards and take a look at the many two toned cars to be seen.

In the meantime you might ask by letter your friend Mr. Tuttle what is his best price cash of course, including everything the latest that he can sell a Plymouth Belvedere, two door not four door for.  The other day we were doing just as you advise looking at colours and we ran across the Torrance dealer without giving our names or anything but he saw the Studebaker and his proposition was as follows:

3258.90    This was on the slip he gave us.
Full equip.
10 – N.P  Ex.  including all taxes etc.
____________ 3258.90
97.77
__27.00
3383.67
683.67allowances on Studebaker
2700.00     Cash.

You can doubtless understand these figures, but I trust you not to allow anyone to see them, for I do not believe in that sort of business, playing one against the other.  He just gave these figures as showing what he could do on a trade etc.  It has already gotten around someway or other that we were in the market for a car and we have told no one not even the dealer who gave these figures.  We avoided saying anything simply looking around but spies are everywhere as well as Cassell’s.

I suppose Mr. Tuttle being in charge of this district will of course recommend someone in this section which I consider advantageous if any fixing is required.

I am busy in the garden and enjoying it very much even if it does make me sit up and take notice so far as so-called muscular action is concerned.  To-day I got in two splendid fifteen ton loads of top soil for the corral or what we call the fruit farm.  This adobe is terrible to work with but excellent soil.

Now my dear boy be a good lad and worthy, as the Son of God.  But ever watch your step.  The enemy is not asleep and neither can the Christian Scientist afford to slip and let evil suggestion enter as his mind and control.  So be very careful and worthy of your high calling and one Mary can be proud of.

Beth sends her warmest regards and my earnest love to you both.

August 14th. 1955.

Dear Joseph E. J.:

Just a line to tell you if I haven’t already done so in another of my letters that I have a brand new Belvidere Plymouth, Red body and Cream top waiting for our dear friend Mrs. Beth to return from the hospital where she has been for 2 weeks with some fool thing I know not even its name.  But I telephoned her a few minutes ago and she is to come home this week when she will begin to drive it and have the time of her life for I have been taking lessons preparatory to my renewing my license so that in case of necessity I could drive the car for her and we would not be stranded here unable to move.

I like the feel of it tremendously, power everything.  So easy to drive it is just getting on to no clutch and no gears.

Your friend’s secretary introduced me to the firm we bought it from, Mr. Atchison of that firm’s name.  She said he is an excellent man. His place of business is San Pedro six miles from here but handy enough to go to.  I know Mrs. Munro will like the whole outfit and the agreement is Mr. Stake the instructor will also instruct her as much as she wants although she has run a power car before.

Nothing new to report except that divine Love is seen more and more each day as directing one and all which means the kingdom of heaven here on earth.

I know this is so with Mary and you and my love to you both.

Herbert W. Eustace.

Dear Joseph E. Johnston:–

Thanks for your letter of the 3rd. to our friend which I am returning to you in this.  Also for the clippings.

I am glad to say Mrs. Munro is back home again but not any too fine by a long way.  I don’t know what they did to her but they certainly took a pretty strong woman and made her a pretty weak one.  Which of course is one big lie.  It is interesting that I am unable to voice audibly hardly a word of Science and that is all right.  Each one must work things out in his own way.  It is all the way there is for each one.  I hate to see her suffer however.  Now don’t you write to her one word about this.  It is her own business and she must be allowed to handle it in her own way.  I feel and I have to be satisfied with that rightly. Jesus did not many wonderful works in certain conditions of thought because of their unbelief the Bible tells us, so we need not feel any disappointment for God is in His Holy heaven and is governing one and all so we know all is well in spite of lying sense.  My typewriter is a little on the bum etc.

My best to you both.

Dear Joseph E. Johnston:–

Thank you for yours of the 27th at Mary’s dictation, a wise girl indeed.  Thank her and tell her I appreciate the love of you two very deeply.

Thank you also for your letter to C—.  I do not think he is worth the effort.  When Ephraim is joined to his idols leave him alone is the command.  I find this so necessary with Mrs. Munro and I know she has to come through God’s direction and only that.  She is a grand and noble thought but as fixed in her ideas as pretty nearly Niagara, so divine Love dictates “they shall all be taught of me”.

I am going on Thursday when Mildred comes down, back with her to pay her my long promised visit for a few days.  Just now both Robert and Janet are here.  Of course Janet goes back to her school of nursing tomorrow I guess, but Bob is here right along.  And her sister will be out too she said, so she will be taken care of all right.  I am here talking of our dear friend Beth, not Mildred.  She is steadily improving but not yet her old self in belief but such determination that she is gaining all the time.  Some moment she will put that same determination back of her acceptance of Christian Science and you will have a really genuine one.
My love to you both.

Herbert W. Eustace.

Dear Joseph E. J:–

Thank you for your pile of past history that you sent Air-mail and which arrived safely.  Now I am returning it to you and my advice to you is to get rid of the whole thing or put in your archives for dunder-heads unlike you and me who through Christian Science know better, to ponder over and get nowhere.  It is the present that holds the Mind and cause and God lives in eternal laws and here and now upholds His throne.  That is not correctly quoted I think but you know what it means to let the dead bury the dead, follow thou Me.

Thank Mary for letting us read and see her splendid talk.  It was to the point and most wisely put and lost none of its force, so putting it.

My best to you both.
Herbert W. Eustace

P.S. Mrs. Munro enjoyed Mary’s talk immensely.  H.W.E.

Dear Joseph E. J:–

Thank you for your “bunch” of mail.  All very interesting as usual but too much rash language for a true metaphysician.  I am returning the ones asked for.

Why be so hasty with your tongue.  I understand perfectly your provocation and agree with your condemnation of such folly but violent language is weakness not strength.  Mrs. Eddy in your reference to the TRIAL in S & H was wholly impersonal.  Try to be that it pays.  Hypocrisy uncovers itself, so sooner or later.  Wait on God but it is right to denounce evil but be impersonal if you want to bless which you do?

Your letter to our friend the Doctor is over his head which you do not want your words to ever be.  Be simple and you get somewhere.  I do not mean by this that our friend is not ready for any Science but it should be put in every day language.  That same with our dear friend Mrs. Munro who as yet has but caught perhaps the faintest gleam of metaphysics.  It takes time and immense patience.  I avoid the subject with her because it only antagonizes I can readily see.

Thanks for invitation from you both to see FROG POND.  Sometimes I will doubtless for God moves in His own way to bless one and all.

You are foolish to “wrestle” with yourself about your being in Los Angeles at a critical time, for you could no more play the part of Judas which had to be played than you can move without belief of matter from your home to California.  You could not have done it, then why try to figure out something that was I am glad to say not your part.  Be satisfied then that God has you always in your right place.

My love and best of all good to Mary and you.

Herbert W. Eustace.

Sunday morning, Dec. 11, 1955

Dear —– —–:

Mr. —– —-‘s letter to Mildred telling her of your would-be encounter with what malicious argument would declare was something harder than you, only reached us last evening.  It was sent to her at the ranch and evidently was not written for quite a little while after the malicious attack took place.

Now, first of all my dear child, I want to point out to you that, as the Christian Scientist, you are never for one instant dealing with effect or things.  You are always as the metaphysician dealing with malicious suggestion in other words pure hypnotic deviltry.

Allow nothing to deceive you on this point.  If you do, you are as powerless as trying to correct three times three are eight with two times two are four.  Tis true two times two are four but never in Kingdom-come will that fact do one thing in righting three times three as eight you know this.  Then be on your toes and do not let fool ignorance blind you to exactly what is operating as direct malicious argument.

In your ignorance you were deceived into turning to the darkened sense that had just fallen for one of the darkest crimes in history, calling darkness light, and joined the band of conspirators determined to destroy the Light of C.C.T. even as rascally evil joined the Next Friend’s Suit in the form of persons, places and things to annihilate Science and Health and incidentally the glorious avenue through which that life-saving Revelation had dawned on human belief.  The purpose and intent were deadly and what happened to all taking part in the villainous plot.  They fell with it.

Now this plot to destroy C.C.T. was identically the same evil mind at work, and it too fell to the ground and those with it.  Now you might say, but why should maliciousness attack —– —–?  Because —– —– refused to join with the conspirators and so aligned belief on the side of God, and this automatically brought forth the claim of the negation, wholly impersonally but not less malicious and devilish because it didn’t declare itself for just what it was, but hiding under the garment of natural ills appearing to her as an accident.  Isn’t that the nature of the beast always hiding under the mask of innocence and doing its damndest to destroy.

Doesn’t Mrs. Eddy demand that the Christian Scientist call error animal magnetism and then instead of handling disease doesn’t she say handle animal magnetism?  Have you been doing this or have you been running hither and thither seeking material aid and finding none because it was not matter that was ever to be dealt with but malicious argument, and all because you took your stand on the side of God, when evil confronted you with its conspiracy to destroy utterly C.C.T.  For this your would-be friends do not love you, any more than Miss Sibyl Wilbur’s former friends loved her for correcting the lies of evil about Mrs. Eddy, but turned a busy career of having all the writing to do she could possibly do, stripped her of every bit of work and landing her high and dry, until the Board of Trustees in the form of the Pub. Society went to her rescue and freed her from the villainy and she lived as that saying is, happily afterwards, but not until the evil was pointed out and she had to see it, that it was not persons, although clothed in the garb of friends, that was trying to destroy her, but pure unadulterated evil.

You must see this very fact.  You stood for Truth and your would-be friends are led to hate you, though claiming the reverse, and that hatred for what you did appears in any old evil language that will most torment and hurt.

Evil has only one purpose and that is to destroy.  You have offended evil and its purpose is to destroy and encourage you to think that an accident occurred.  No accident ever occurred.  You never fell in a bath tub, or out of one, and where is the only eye or head to be damaged if such a fall could take place?

Isn’t God All-in-all?  Where is there room then for ought else?  Jerk yourself loose from this mesmerism and get on your feet (understanding) and don’t be whipped around the place.  No claim is ever a thing.  It is always the one lie, animal magnetism, and must be handled as such.  Be not deceived.  God is not mocked.  Whatsoever a man thinketh in his heart so is he.  What are you thinking in your heart?  – that you did fall, that you did hurt yourself and so forth?  You never did.  Get some of the spirit of our colored friend and realize it TAIN’T SO and the whole lie vanishes spontaneously.  This is Christian Science and nothing else is.  As Mrs. Eddy so beautifully puts it, “When thought is lost in the immanence of Mind the healing takes place.”  Not the immanence of matter but Mind.

My love to you,

Herbert W. Eustace

P.S.  Read carefully on page 28 of Whoso, beginning line 7, “If any honest Christian Scientist can be deceived, etc.”    HWE

Dear Mary and Joseph:–

What a Christmas you never saw when your lovely gifts all came in and were spread out on the dining room table with that wonder center piece, the glorious little White and Green Christmas tree.  Such a gem all hung beautifully with tiny bells in various colours.  Mildred just came in as I was unpacking both boxes and she was amazed as Dorothea will be too.  I wish Mrs. Munro could see it all and especially the tree.  That is the sort of thing she dotes on and someday when I am going down I will certainly take it along with me for I intend to keep it.  It is such a work of art in glass.

The basket, all the other things were loaded into, is equally fine and will be used and treasured a long time.  Every imaginable jellie and jam was in the assortment to say nothing of cakes and cookies galore.  The whole box has to be seen to be appreciated.  It was what I call a sail boat basket, and it was loaded as I believe the nautical term is to the gall yards.  It is as truly wonderful and I thank you both very much for giving them to us.  It is the greatest assortment of gifts I ever had given me either at Christmas or any other time.

But now my dear boy I want to say something to you.  Do you not know as a Christian Scientist, I have been receiving and giving no gifts at Christmas time except a few perhaps to children for a lot over fifty years and here you come like a typical Santa Claus, loaded to the hilt, and land them right at our door.  Now it was awfully dear of you both but please never do it again.  Mrs. Eddy knew far better than you or I can possibly know with out limited sense of Christ how wise her judgment always was and the wise Christian Scientist never departs from it, so with a deep deep thank you my dear friends this ends all that sort of giving.  I long for heaven not earth and I long for it right here and now.  Spiritual things not material ones, but thank you just the same this time.  Mildred is off with Dorothea tomorrow taking Gullan down to her relatives in Phoenix.  She will be back in a week.

May the joy and truth of “Blest Christmas morn” be with you Christmas Day and every day and I know the New Year is filled with every good thing for you both.  As Mrs. Eddy says “What joy is ours as Christian Scientists.  Infinite Love all our own.  Tireless Love watching our waiting, Pointing the way.  Guiding our footsteps.  Turning them hither and thither as Wisdom directs.  Then when the lesson is learned.  Supplying the need and ending the warfare.”  This is your joy both of you.  My love to you both.

You two dear people:–

This little apartment is literally full of your lovely flowers and all your sweet and generous gifts of pretty nearly every kind and in such overwhelming quantities.  You make me think of that dear home-maker of mine Mrs. Munro who sends me cookies and things she makes and knows I like them and sends them to last me a lifetime almost.  She is so afraid I will not eat enough and sends strict instructions to poor Mildred to make me do so and so when poor Mildred all her life has had all she could do to stop me making her do things, and now the table is turned and Mrs. Munro tries to make her make me do things in the way of eating and what to eat?  Funny world this!  No wonder Shakespeare said “Each man in his time plays many parts.  They have their exits and their entrances”.  In the end all get their exits permanently, “the wind passeth over it and it is gone and the place knows it no more”.

That is just about it in my being in San Jose even after these few short years away.  It is as though I had never been there.   I have left it all behind me and neither I nor the place know one another any more.

But to return to your many gifts. The flowers are just perfectly lovely and the two flowering plants are doing splendidly and that glorious bunch of carnations is a wonder in their Pine setting.  An immense bowl of them and Mildred has just telephoned me. She and Dorothea took Gullan down to her relatives in Phoenix for Christmas and they are now at Paso Robles on their return and I am so glad she will be here to see your wondrous array of beauty.  That is the flowers, there are all the jams and jellies and Biscuits and what nots.  You must not do such a thing again and I mean it.  I have them all laid out on the dining room table and they stare me in the face and try to shame me that I am neglecting them.  I tell them though that I am only one and there are enough good things there for a dozen.

Well you were both very dear and I thank you deeply.  It is all Love’s own doing and you are embraced in that Love and so reap its reward.  Yes, Christmas is truly for the children but do you practise that young lady and young man?

We have been having some tremendous supplies of water given us and that makes every real Californian rejoice.  I always tell people you are not a genuine Californian if you ever murmur at rain.  Rain is the joy of California.  Without it where would the state be?  I am an old time Californian before all the new ways of getting water to your ranches came about and so I appreciate water at its full value.

And now my dear friends I know what 1956 holds for you both, infinite good, less personality and all that that statement of Mrs. Eddy’s means and implies “What joy is ours as Christian Scientists.  Infinite Love all our own.  Tireless Love watching our waiting.”

Much love to you both and I thank you deeply for your genuine friendship.
Herbert W. Eustace.
